Lightning Basketball will be expanding its operations this Fall in order to better serve the North Shore of Nassau County..
Successful long time Lightning coach Jason Helguero has agreed to be the Director of this new initiative which will be called North Shore Lightning. It will be based in the most northern part of Nassau County serving the communities of Great Neck, Manhasset, Port Washington, Syosset, Jericho, Woodbury, Oyster Bay, Brookville, Glen Cove, Glen Head, Bayville and other neighboring towns. Players will still have the choice of playing for Lightning teams based at Island Garden. Suffolk residents are not impacted as this new division will be for Nassau residents only. Lightning Basketball will be securing gyms in North Shore to provide our basketball families convenient access to practice and game sites. The most established teams, which will play a more competitive schedule, will still come out of Island Garden,. The North Shore Lightning initially will be expansion teams that will have excellent coaching but will play and practice closer to their homes. They will definitely provide the Lightning experience of excellent coaching, outstanding administration and the reputation of being part of the largest and most successful AAU program in the country.
Jason Helguero, the Director of North Shore Lightning, has years of experience as a coach, administrator, and commissioner for various organizations that include AAU, PAL, CYO, and town travel teams. This past year alone Jason coached and managed over a dozen travel teams which included Lightning, Commack, and Syosset. He is one of the top coaches on Long Island and is deeply committed to youth development. His resume includes coaching well over a thousand games and numerous AAU tournament championships and league titles. Jason is a winner who is extraordinarily dedicated to youth basketball. We are elated to now have him as a Lightning Director.
We will be holding tryouts in early September to form these new teams.
