For the past seven years, we have hosted sessions in September, October and early November that focus on training and techniques designed to assist the player to stand out in their upcoming tryouts.
There are several important parts to this very successful program.
1- Provide a great instructor who is directly involved with selecting teams as a high school coach. Our answer to this is Thomas Paul. He is one of the top coaches in the Nassau Suffolk Catholic League where he has been part of the staff that has won multiple league championships at Chaminade. Each year, he is part of the staff that must select from among literally dozes of players who are seeking a limited number of spots. This is never an easy task from either the coach’s role or the prospective players. This is an excellent opportunity to understand what the coach is looking for from one of the most experienced and respected coaches on all of Long Island.
2-Provide a program with excellent results. Our answer to this is our proven record. Last year over 80% of our middle school players were selected for their school teams and high school had a majority of the program participants become part of their teams. There is no doubt that participation in this program will enhance your chances of making the team.
3- Provide excellent intense training in a very focused learning environment. Our answer to this again is Thomas Paul. In addition to being part of one of the most respected high school coaching staffs here on Long Island, Coach Paul is one of the lead trainers at Crown Basketball which has quickly become the most respected training programs on Long Island. Coach Paul is one of the best in that he is organized, is a trained educator and knows what it takes to be successful. He is a “specialist”.
4- Provide a location that caters to those on the North Shore of Long Island. Our answer for the past seven years has been to hold this type of training for those who are the furthest from Island Garden. We recognize that it is not always convenient to come to Island Garden especially during the evenings in the Fall when everyone is starting a new school year. We have an excellent facility at Chabad in Port Washington where we have been able to host these training sessions. All are welcome to participate no matter where you live but we do hope that our followers from Great Neck through Syosset will find this location to be more convenient.

ITS TIME TO OFFER MORE TRAINING FOR GIRLS
We here at Island Garden, Lightning and FE Hoops are renewing our commitment to developing the basketball skills of our young female athletes.
Our first program will be held at Chabad in Port Washington beginning October 3 and continuing for six consecutive Sundays.
There will be two sessions each Sunday:
2nd and 3rd Graders – from 12 PM to 1 PM
4th and 5th Graders – from 1 PM to 2 PM.
This program will be under the direction of Christi Abate who is a former college player at Binghamton University. She went on coach for 16 years, the last 13 of which was at Iona College. Since leaving college coaching to raise her own children, Christi has run several clinics and camps as well as acting in an administrative capacity for Lightning Basketball where she specializes in placing our girls in college programs.
This program will focus on developing fundamental skills in such areas as shooting, ball handling and footwork. Special arrangements will be made for the 2nd and 3rd Graders in that the baskets will be dropped to 81/2 feet and the Junior size ball will be used. This is done so that the young athlete does not over compensate and develop poor habits in trying to reach the basket.
Enrollment will be limited to 16 athletes in each session.
Chabad is located at 80 Shore road in Port Washington.
The fee for the six week course is $225.00. This fee will include the six weeks of training, insurance and a reversible workout top.
