At every level, players, coaches and fans complain about referees. Some are valid criticisms and some are not. We all realize and should accept that referees are human and can make errors from time to time. What cannot be accepted is a lack of knowledge of the rules, poor mechanics and absence of hustle! We have considered various options to address this very important part of the game and, by extension, our product to you our customers.
We initially began an evaluation process wherein senior officials would report back to me about the ability level of each referee. We would rank the referees and would assign accordingly. This approach worked fairly well but it simply was not enough.
During the past three months, we have added Ernie Rudloff to our team of evaluators. Ernie is a long time official who worked at the highest level of college basketball. He also has served as one of the leaders of IAABO Board 119 in Queens for many years. Even more important in our decision to bring Ernie aboard is his dedication to developing new officials. This has worked extremely well to date. Ernie not only provides me with fair and accurate evaluations, he also takes officials aside and speaks to them about his impressions of their work and how they can improve. Ernie is a teacher by profession and we all are benefiting from his experience, expertise and commitment.
When you see Ernie at one of our game sites, thank him for helping us making the Island Garden experience even better than before.
