A Great Day for Sports and a Reminder of Why We Do This

Today is a great day for all of us sports fans across our country. Watching our Olympic hockey team win the gold medal this morning was inspiring, exciting, and deeply meaningful. It reminded all of us how powerful sports can be: how they bring families together, unify communities, and reflect the very best of who we are.

Moments like that reinforce what we believe every day here at Island Garden: sports are not just games. They are shared experiences. They build character, create lifelong memories, and connect us as families, as communities, and as Americans.

We are proud to play a small part in providing those same opportunities for young athletes here at home.

Weather Challenges and the Reality of Running a Large League

As all of you know, we are currently facing another major winter storm, with forecasts predicting up to 24 inches of snow. As a result, we have already been forced to cancel more than 65 games scheduled for Sunday and Monday, and potentially more on Tuesday as well.

This comes on top of significant disruptions earlier this month, including:

  • 70 games canceled due to a previous snowstorm
  • 20 games canceled due to a facility scheduling error at SUNY Old Westbury
  • 65+ additional games canceled this week due to the current storm

In total, we are now working to reschedule approximately 160 games.

This all took place just as we were finalizing the entire league schedule.

Most people understandably focus on the cancellations themselves. In reality, that is only the beginning of the work required.

Each of those 160 games requires:

  • Assignment of approximately 320 referees
  • Coordination with multiple facilities across the area
  • Communication with over 300 teams and their families
  • Adjustment of standings, divisions, and competitive balance
  • Preservation of fairness and integrity for every team in the league

This is an enormous logistical undertaking, and it requires careful planning, experience, and constant communication.

The Work Ahead and Our Commitment to Making It Right

Our entire scheduling staff is now fully engaged in the process of making up as many of these games as possible. This effort is underway and will continue every single day until every available solution has been explored.

The greatest challenge we face is not willingness; it is court availability. There is a finite amount of court space in our area, and every organization is dealing with similar weather-related disruptions. Despite this reality, we are aggressively reaching out to every possible facility and partner to secure additional court time. We are exploring expanded hours, additional days, and new locations wherever possible.

Our commitment is clear: we will do everything possible to make this right.

This has been, without question, one of the most difficult winters we have experienced in many years of operating the Super League. The number of cancellations in such a short period is unprecedented. Nevertheless, our staff will continue working every day to respond to these challenges and minimize the impact on our teams.

We respectfully ask for your patience and understanding during this process.

Running a league of this size involves thousands of moving parts; players, teams, referees, facilities, schedules, and standings. Every decision must be made carefully to protect fairness, competitive integrity, and the experience of every participant.

We also recognize that disruptions can lead to frustration. We understand that everyone cares deeply about their teams and their players. We simply ask that everyone consider the full scope of what goes into operating a league of this magnitude, especially during one of the most severe winters in recent memory. A spirit of mutual understanding and respect helps us all move forward together and ultimately benefits every athlete in the league.

In the meantime, please know that our staff remains fully engaged and committed to navigating the challenges posed by this extraordinary winter. We will continue working relentlessly to adjust, respond, and deliver the experience our families expect and deserve.

Looking Ahead: Strength, Stability, and Opportunity

Despite the challenges of this winter, the strength of the Island Garden Super League has never been greater.

Every season, thousands of young athletes participate in our league. They are developing their skills, building confidence, learning discipline, and forming friendships that will last a lifetime. These opportunities exist because of the shared commitment of players, coaches, families, referees, and our staff.

The Super League has been built over three decades through consistency, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is best for young athletes. That foundation remains as strong today as ever.

As we move forward, we are already preparing for the spring and summer seasons, which will bring new opportunities for competition, growth, and achievement. Warmer weather, expanded programming, and new events will allow our athletes to continue their development in a positive and structured environment.

Adversity tests organizations. It also strengthens them.

This winter has challenged all of us. But it has also reaffirmed the resilience of our community and the dedication of everyone involved in making this league special.

We remain fully committed, not just to resolving the present challenges but to continuing to build a league that families can rely on, trust, and take pride in for many years to come.

Thank you for your continued support, your patience, and your trust in Island Garden Basketball and the Super League. It is an honor and a responsibility that we take very seriously.

We look forward to seeing everyone back on the court as soon as this crazy snow stops.
